If you’re writing your own content for your blog, social media, website, and email marketing, you’ve got a lot on your to-do list! As many entrepreneurs do when building a business, the list seems to go on and on. So how can you be sure that your writing comes across as sounding like you? There are a few techniques that’ll get you closer to sharing your dynamic personality in each post.
Feeling and Emotion Words
The use of words that show your feelings and emotions can truly hit the points of who you are and how you talk with others. If you’re the type of coach who is very direct with her clients, and who doesn’t hold back from telling them EXACTLY how things are then you should use more specific words and less soft wording. Here are two examples:
Direct: You’ll need to look at what’s holding you back from making this happen!
Soft: You’ll need to take a step back from the situation to see what doesn’t feel “right”.
Read the above two sentences out loud. Do you hear the difference? They’re basically saying the same thing with the first using words that show taking physical action (holding you back, making this happen) and the second using softer, more introspective action (take a step back, what doesn’t feel “right”).
Add Your Enthusiasm
Exclamation Points
The use of exclamation points in writing has evolved over the last few years. If you’re enthusiastic about a point you’re making in your post and you’d show that in your verbal delivery of that point (say, during a one-to-one session), go ahead and include an exclamation point! (See what I did there?)
I do caution against the combination of exclamation points and the trend of capitalizing entire words. The combination can still be read as yelling rather than genuine enthusiasm, and that may not be the feeling that you’re trying to convey.
Breaking Up Text
Another frequently used technique to stop a reader’s eyes is using periods to sentences up into words. This is more often used in casual posts on social media, it can work in blog posts as well. Before using this, consider your ideal client. If they’re reading your posts outside of a formal work environment, this is likely to work. If your ideal clients work with you out of their offices where they wear suits every day, then this may not be the best way to appeal to them.
Adding Media
The use of videos and photos can quickly show your personality so your readers can hear or see you.
Video: Quickly shoot a video showing your in-depth info that can be difficult to articulate in writing, such as how to deliver a verbal message.
Photos: A photo of your progress on a project, results from a program, or even your on-site work can go a long way to showing your readers what makes you (and your work) unique. Yes, I did add a photo to illustrate my point. 🙂
Spice it up!
There are so many ways to add personality to your writing that you can do better than a bland post with minimal personality, drab wording, and no images.
